-Childhood sweethearts Ethan and Gwen had been together for years and Gwen was waiting not-so-patiently for a proposal. Ms. Hotchkiss was definitely not subtle about her hints! But when Ethan finally proposed, Gwen turned him down! She felt that he only proposed because she wanted him to...not because it was what he wanted in his heart. Gwen said she would wait until Ethan's proposal was heartfelt.

-Unbeknownst to Ethan and Gwen, Theresa had loved Ethan for her entire life and was thrilled when Gwen turned down Ethan's proposal. After all, she believed she now had time to win Ethan over for herself. Theresa was confident she could get close to Ethan while working at the Crane mansion as Ivy's assistant.

-Ethan finally decided it was time to buy an engagement ring for Gwen and pop the question. He even asked Theresa to go with him to pick out the engagement ring. At the jewelry store, Ethan asked Theresa to try on the ring so he could see how it looked. Theresa, of course, was more than happy to oblige! But something unexpected happened when Theresa put the ring on...she couldn't get it off! Theresa was convinced that fate had something to do with the ring being stuck on her finger.

-After quite a few close calls with Gwen, the ring finally came off Theresa's finger. Ethan was delighted, but Theresa was devastated. Ethan finally proposed to his childhood sweetheart. This time, a thrilled Gwen gleefully accepted!

-Just as Ethan and Gwen began planning the wedding, Gwen was called away on business. Before she left, Gwen asked Theresa to help Ethan plan the wedding while she was away! Theresa was thrilled to help out, knowing that this would be her chance to spend a lot of time with Ethan. Theresa seemed to be right, as she and Ethan bonded during the time they spent together.

-Theresa's dreams came true when she accompanied Ethan on a trip to Bermuda, so that she could help him plan his honeymoon with Gwen. While there, Ethan and Theresa shared candlelit dinners and dances under the stars. It soon became apparent that, despite his engagement to Gwen, Ethan's feelings for Theresa had gone beyond mere friendship.

-Eventually Gwen came back to town, but Theresa had already declared her feelings for Ethan. Ethan claimed he only had feelings for Theresa as a friend, but Ms. Lopez-Fitzgerald was not about to give up! And she had good reason not to...at last, Ethan admitted his feelings for Theresa and revealed he was going to break his engagement to Gwen.

-The night before Ethan and Gwen's wedding, Ethan finally broke the news to a hurt and devastated Gwen. When everyone calmed down, Ethan admitted to the two ladies that he loved both of them. Gwen came up with a plan that he should date them both, and then decide which woman he wanted to marry!

-Ethan agreed to Gwen's dating scheme and began dating both Theresa and Gwen. Each woman hoped she would be the one Ethan wanted to spend his life with.

-On Christmas Eve, Ethan finally came to his decision. At Midnight Mass, while a devastated Gwen looked on, he asked Theresa to be his wife. Theresa said an exuberant yes!

-Theresa may have had Ethan's ring on her finger, but this triangle was definitely not over. Theresa became her own worst enemy when she kept secrets and told lies in order to hold onto her fiancé-the biggest secret being that she was married to Julian Crane and pregnant with his baby! Eventually, Theresa's lies were exposed and a crushed Ethan told Theresa he could not marry her.

-After Ethan and Theresa's relationship came to an end, Gwen told Ethan she would always be there for him as a friend. The two began spending more and more time together as friends and soon love blossomed once again.

-While at a jewelry store, Ethan secretly decided the time was right to once again ask Gwen to be his wife. He bought an engagement ring and planned to ask Gwen to marry him. Thanks to Theresa (who believed the ring was for her), Gwen found out about Ethan's plans to propose. Gwen was thrilled and couldn't wait for Ethan to pop the question. Meanwhile, Ethan received advice from those around him that he should be sure of whom he wanted to spend his life with. These words caused Ethan to question his decision.

-Ethan was about to say the magic words to Gwen when he was interrupted with the news that Theresa's baby was sick. When the baby pulled through, Gwen waited for Ethan to pop the question but the ordeal with the baby had given him even more time to think about whom he wanted to marry. It had also given Ethan the chance to see Theresa in a new light-as a selfless, devoted mother.

-After the ordeal with the baby, Gwen and Ethan once again found themselves alone. But to Gwen's frustration, he still did not propose! Theresa was thrilled when she realized Gwen did not yet have a ring on her finger. Theresa believed that Ethan had changed his mind-and was going to propose to her!
